Christmas Vacation
Celebrate 40 years of Batavia!
Uncover hidden stories at Museum Batavialand
Vacancy: Metal Restorer
Museum Batavialand is the museum about the history of Flevoland. We tell the impressive story of the reclamation, where the wild Zuiderzee was curbed with dikes and transformed into habitable land. Where human activity goes further back in time: from the busy Zuiderzee of the 16th and 17th centuries to the prehistoric Swifterbant culture.
Using unique archaeological finds, historical objects and unique shipwrecks, we present the story of Flevoland to a wide and international audience. This history comes further to life at our shipyard, where we recreate historic ships and breathe new life into traditional crafts.
Museum Batavialand is custodian of the national maritime archaeological collection and also has its own museum collection. We also house the Provincial Archaeological Depot Flevoland (PADF). For the management and preservation of these three collections we are immediately looking for a
Metal Conservator (24 hours).
The newly appointed conservator will join several ongoing conservation and restoration projects at Museum Batavialand and work within the museum in a team of collection staff (materials specialists, ship archaeologists, depot managers, etc.) managing the various depots.
The department
As a new employee, you will be part of the Knowledge and Collections Department. This department consists of sixteen employees who work enthusiastically to preserve the collections of the PADF, the national maritime collection, and the museum collection of Flevoland as well as possible and make them accessible for presentation and research. They do this through depot management, conservation and restoration of objects, research and development of various exhibitions.
The restoration studio
The museum's current restoration studio has facilities to restore small objects ranging from wood and textiles to ceramics and metal. In connection with an upcoming renovation of the museum and associated new construction, the duties of the prospective employee will focus on performing condition checks and restoration of the collection from the depot. A larger restoration studio, intended for the conservation of ship parts and associated inventory, will be constructed in the near future. In this future setting, conservation of new large finds will also become part of the (daily) operations.
What will you do?
- You perform conservation and restoration treatments based on research into the object's condition and causes of decay, and record them in a conservation/restoration report;
- You will determine and/or develop a method of conservation and possibly restoration that will lead to optimal results based on (inter)nationally accepted guidelines on restoration ethics, and contribute to innovation in this area;
- You will be partly responsible for the arrangement and assembly of objects in the permanent and temporary presentations, both inside and outside Museum Batavialand;
- You will organize and coordinate outgoing loan traffic;
- You translate research findings to colleagues, the public and peers;
- You actively build a network
What do you bring?

- You have experience preserving archaeological objects;
- You have knowledge of processing condition reports in a database, preferably Axiell and/or Atlantis Museum module;
