Open Call: Atelier Framed Residency 2025-2026

KITLV and Framer Framed are pleased to announce the international open call for the 2025-2026 Atelier Framed Residency . Applications are now open and the deadline for submitting the application for the first round is 30 May 2025 . The residency will begin in Autumn 2025.

The Residency Programme

The Atelier Framed Artist Residency programme supports innovative and societally relevant projects at the intersection of art and academic research in Southeast Asian and/or Caribbean Studies, with a focus on (post)colonial theory and discourse. The programme is open to applicants who have experience and interest in developing a project exploring themes relevant to this field. The duration of the residency is twelve months.

The selected participant(s) will have access to Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV) and Leiden University collections and engage in dialogue with KITLV researchers and the Framer Framed team to inform and inspire their work. They will join the Framer Framed network and be supported in developing and sharing the project through a presentation and/or other discursive programmes.

The selected participant(s) will receive a €10.000,- grant (including VAT) for the entire project. This fee is inclusive of all costs necessary for realising the project (travel, visa cost, accommodation, project research, material costs, production et al).

Previous artists participating in the residency programme were Theo Frids Marulitua Hutabarat, and Mirelle van Tulder. The outcome of their residencies have been shown, among other places, in the exhibition Sensible Past: Of Distances and the Fabrication of the Frame (2024) presented in Bandung, Indonesia.

How to apply

Candidates are invited to submit their application in English. The application consists of two rounds:

1. For the first round, all applicants should include in their application: a CV, portfolio and a brief formulation of a project idea for the residency (max 200 words).

Combine all documents in one pdf file (no more than 5MB) and send to with the title [your name_2025 KITLV-Framer Framed residency application].

The application documents will be assessed by the residency admissions jury (the Atelier Framed Artist Residency programme team) - at the end of which one application will be selected. The selection committee will assess the applications based on the quality of the proposal and its relevance to the aims of the residency.

The results of the open call will be announced by the end of September 2025 on KITLV and Framer Framed's websites. Unfortunately, due to the large number of applications, we are unable to provide feedback on unsuccessful applications.

Please note:The residency does not provide a living space or studio, but guidance on accommodation in the Netherlands is available. While participants are not required to reside in the Netherlands during the residency, they are expected to engage both physically and digitally with the residency resources throughout the year.
