Internship Python-Based Modelling of Global Maritime Emissions

We have developed a global maritime emissions projection model named "CE-Ship". The CE-Ship model is an in-house model which allows to project and analyse the developments of the global shipping fleet and its GHG emissions for a wide range of business as usual (BAU) and abatement scenarios, up to 2050.

Originally developed in Excel, the model is increasingly challenged by the growing complexity of maritime climate policies and scenario analyses. We would like to develop the model further and are therefore looking for an intern with strong Python skills and an interest in optimisation problems and dynamic, modular modelling.

This internship offers a unique opportunity to help transition a high-profile policy model towards a more robust, scalable, and future-proof Python-based architecture.

Project definition

The core of the project focuses on improving the structure and performance of the CE-Ship model in a Python-based architecture. During this task the candidate will adress challenges such as:

• Designing modular, scalable, and maintainable model code
• Supporting increasingly complex policy and technology scenarios
• Ensuring transparency, documentation, and reproducibility of results

You will work closely with several CE Delft researchers who have extensive expertise in maritime policy analysis, emissions modelling, and Python development. While prior knowledge of maritime shipping is not required, an affinity with the sector or with applied climate-policy modelling is considered an advantage.

The project scope can be adapted, if needed, to meet university credit requirements.

Background

To support evidence-based decision-making on addressing GHG emissions from international shipping, several organisations have commissioned research studies to estimate greenhouse gas emissions from the sector and project possible developments. Such studies act as a global reference in estimating GHG emissions from international shipping. The CE-ship model has been used to support emission projections for the IMO, the European Commission among other clients.

Offer and Conditions

• We expect a project duration of between 24 and 40 hours a week for a period of three to six months. The specific project duration and hours per week will be determined by mutual agreement, subject to arrangements yet to be finalized.
• The internship allowance is €450 per month for a full-time position. Travel costs will be reimbursed.
• The main working language at CE Delft is Dutch, but candidates are not required to be fluent in Dutch as long as candidates are fluent in English.
• The intern is expected to work from the CE Delft office in Delft at least two days a week. The work location for the remaining days can be filled in freely.
• It is possible to expand or adjust the project definition to meet requirements for university credits.

Confidentiality and Intellectual Property

The model is and will remain property of CE Delft. The intern will get access to confidential information belonging to clients, CE Delft itself, and third parties. The intern is prohibited from disclosing any such confidential information to third parties in any manner whatsoever. This obligation applies both during and after the internship at CE Delft.
