We are currently looking for a Project Leader to work within the Optics domain in Delft .

As a Project leader, you will take ownership of complex, experimental research and development projects that drive innovation in optical and semiconductor technologies, delivering outcomes that have a positive impact for industry and society. The developed optical systems range from very large telescopes to tiny photonic integrated circuits (PICs) on a microchip.

Project Leader - Optics

Main responsibilities

• You will guide the development and realisation of these cutting-edge systems and ensure that each project meets the highest standards of technical excellence, quality, and impact.
• You will shape new project opportunities from the earliest stages , defining proposals, developing project goals, and working closely with scientific leads, business development colleagues and industry partners to ensure new assignments.
• You will be responsible for delivering high-quality results on time and within budget , ensuring customer satisfaction while fostering a positive and supportive atmosphere within the project team.
• You will lead multidisciplinary teams of scientists, engineers, and experimentalists, both from within the 60-person Optics Department and from other departments across the organisation.
• You will inspire close collaboration, shared commitment, and a healthy balance between high performance and wellbeing of your team members.
• As the primary point of contact for customers and suppliers , you will maintain clear and effective communication throughout the project lifecycle.
• You will manage several projects in parallel , balancing resources and adapting to shifting priorities in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

Requirements

• Background in applied physics, chemistry, materials science, or engineering (BSc or higher), with 10+ years' experience in high tech systems and strong exposure to the semiconductor industry.
• Affinity with optics technology and the ability to collaborate effectively with optics specialists.
• Proven track record in managing complex, multidisciplinary, and experimental R&D projects , ideally supported by formal project management training or certification.
• Strong leadership skills : able to motivate, guide, and align technical experts toward shared goals.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities , from technical teams to executive and customer levels; fluent in English.
• Structured, calm, and proactive working style, capable of handling multiple dynamic projects simultaneously with strong analytical and conceptual thinking.
• Customer focused, commercially aware, and strategically minded, able to translate customer needs into effective actions.
