1646 is an international art space in The Hague, with a rich history of exhibitions for emerging and established artists. The program showcases innovative and critical artistic practices, supporting artists locally, nationally, and internationally in creating new work.

1646 programs artists who explore critical societal ideas using strategies such as fictioning, complicating, and humor. Fiction is an essential tool for imagining the world differently. Similarly, embracing and celebrating complexity, contradiction, and paradox-as inherent qualities of human existence-is essential to counterbalance the dominance of rationality and logic. Finally, the use of playfulness and humor as tools is necessary to maintain an open attitude.

This vision translates into an ambitious exhibition programme, a residency programme, and public activities, including screenings, performances, and presentations both within and beyond the exhibition space.

1646 is led by two directors and supported by a small, dedicated team including a Business Coordinator, a Production team member, a Marketing, PR and Communications team member, and a Public, Education and Inclusion team member, working in close collaboration with a pool of freelancers and volunteers.

Due to the departure of our current Production team member, we are seeking an Exhibition & Programme Producer who can translate artistic plans into technically well-considered, organisationally solid, and high-quality realisations.

The Role

As Exhibition & Program Producer, you are ultimately responsible for the production and technical realization of the exhibition program, the residency program, and the associated programming.

You work closely with artists, residents, and the core team of 1646 - particularly the curators - as well as with freelancers and volunteers. You are involved from the start and oversee the technical feasibility, scheduling, budgeting, safety, and execution throughout the entire process.

You combine project management with technical expertise and are also hands-on in the setup and realization of the projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES - Ultimate responsibility for the production and technical realization of exhibitions, residencies, and public activities. - Monitoring execution quality, progress, deadlines, and production budgets. - Maintaining thorough administration and financial management of production and activity budgets. - Ensuring a safe working environment during the execution of production tasks. - Managing and maintaining technical equipment and the (exhibition) space.

TASKS - Developing and monitoring production plans, budgets, and schedules. - Directing and coordinating installation and dismantling with external suppliers, technicians, and volunteers. - Advising artists on constructions, materials, installations, and audiovisual applications. - Translating artistic concepts into concrete technical solutions, including reading and, if necessary, creating technical drawings. - Hands-on contribution to the installation of exhibitions and programming. - Coordinating art transportation, insurance, and condition reports. - Organizing travel and accommodation for artists and residents. - Providing production support for resident artists and serving as the main point of contact for technical and practical questions. - Producing openings, performances, workshops, dinners, and other events, including logistical and technical coordination and volunteer management (in collaboration with the Public, Education & Inclusion ).

Job Requirements

We are looking for a producer with demonstrable experience in exhibition production within contemporary art. You have:

- Proven experience in producing exhibitions and/or art projects. - Technical knowledge of exhibition construction, structures, materials, and audiovisual applications. - Insight into spatial translation of artistic concepts. - Experience with planning, budget monitoring, and project coordination. - Ability to independently structure and manage production processes. - Strong organizational skills, accuracy, and decisiveness. You maintain an overview even under time pressure and have a strong sense of responsibility. - Good communication skills in Dutch and English. - Experience coordinating volunteers or leading teams is a plus.

Given the nature of the work, preference will be given to candidates residing in (the region of) The Hague. Occasional evening and weekend work during events is part of the role.

Employment Conditions

1646 offers a fixed-term employment contract of 1 year, with terms in accordance with the Richtlijn Functie- en Loongebouw Presentatie-instellingen from De Zaak Nu. Subject to well-being, there is the possibility of extension and potential permanent contract. The salary, based on a full-time position, ranges from €3,554.10 to €4,406.60, depending on knowledge and work experience. In addition, 1646 offers a vacation period of 2 weeks in winter and 4 weeks in summer.
