Senior Process Engineer - High Temperature Heat Pump

THINKING ABOUT TOMORROW, TAKING CARE OF TODAY

Wilgenhaege Innovations focuses on next-generation technologies in the field of sustainability. This includes high temperature heat pumps and innovative production technologies that enable factories to operate entirely without greenhouse gas emissions. We invest in progress - and therefore in a cleaner, better future.

To further strengthen our (digital) growth, we are looking for a senior Process Engineer High Temparature Heat Pump

    About the Role

We are developing next-Generation high-temperature heat pumps based on natural, zero-TFA working fluids, targeting industrial decarbonization.

To strengthen our team further, we are looking for a Senior Process Engineer who will play pivotal role in developing the process control philosophy, dynamic behavior, and operational & high-level safety logic of our future products. You define how the heat pump should behave across all operating modes, while working closely with Control & Automation engineers who implement your intent in PLCs and software. This role ensures the system is thermodynamically sound, operable, safe, and scalable.

    Responsibilities:

    • Define the process design basis, control philosophy, dynamic behavior into clear operating and control requirements
    • Specify operating modes (startup, normal operation, part-load, shutdown, emergency) and the required transitions between them
    • Establish the operating envelope (pressure, temperature, flow, compressor limits) and define process constraints/limits
    • Analyze and manage transient behavior (startup/shutdown, load changes, disturbances, fault scenarios) and define mitigation strategies
    • Define sequencing, permissives, interlocks, and process-level shutdown criteria (what must happen and when)
    • Provide process input to safety functions (trip conditions, fail-safe states, recovery logic) and allocation between process control and instrumentation where applicable
    • Contribute to and/or lead HAZID/HAZOP from a process/operability perspective; ensure requirements are clear, complete, and testable
    • Collaborate with Control & Automation engineers to ensure implementation matches process intent (PLC/software implementation owned by automation)
    • Owning and reviewing process documentation like PFDs, P&IDs, control philosophies, and calculations
    • Support evaluation of where advanced control concepts (e.g., cascade, feedforward, model-based approaches) add value versus complexity

    Requirements

    Experience & competencies

    • 8+ years in process engineering and/or process control of industrial thermal or energy systems
    • Experience in design and development of heat pump / HVAC is a pre
    • Strong capability to translate thermodynamic and dynamic behavior into operability, control, and safety requirements
    • Solid understanding of industrial control concepts (sequencing, interlocks, permissives, operating modes)
    • Process-level knowledge of Safety Instrumented Functions: trip conditions, thresholds, fail-safe behavior, redundancy concepts
    • Working knowledge of ISA-84 / IEC 61511 concepts and the System Instrumented System lifecycle at a process definition level
    • Strong fundamentals in thermodynamics, heat transfer, and dynamic systems behavior
    • Proven track record in working in project teams with strict scope, budget and deadlines

    Qualifications

    • MSc in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Control Engineering, or related field

    What we offer?

    • A key role in bridging thermodynamics and automation
    • Influence on efficiency, operability, and safety of next generation heat pumps
    • Close collaboration and excellent teamwork environment
    • Opportunity to shape an industrial product from early concept to deployment
    • Competitive compensation and flexible work arrangements
