About the assignment
Battery systems for off-highway vehicles and equipment-such as excavators, loaders, forklifts, and generator sets-face unique durability challenges due to frequent exposure to shock and vibration. These mechanical stresses can lead to critical failure modes in battery packs and modules, affecting their reliability and lifetime.
In this internship/graduation project, you will investigate the durability of battery systems under shock and vibration, focusing on off-highway applications including generator sets. Your research will start by gaining a thorough understanding of the most common and critical failure modes of battery packs and modules due to mechanical stress. Next, you will analyze the different mechanical environmental influences present in various off-highway applications. Based on this analysis, you will develop a methodology to group applications with similar mechanical profiles, optimizing the testing and validation process. You will then evaluate available testing standards and procedures, and propose solutions to improve durability-both within the battery pack itself and through external solutions.
What will you do?
- Gain understanding of the most common and critical failure modes of battery packs and modules due to mechanical stress.
- Analyze and compare mechanical environmental influences (shock, vibration, etc.) in different off-highway applications, including generator sets.
- Develop a methodology to group applications based on their mechanical profiles, aiming to streamline testing and validation.
- Investigate available testing standards and procedures for battery durability in off-highway vehicles and equipment.
- Propose solutions to enhance durability, both through internal battery pack design and external solutions.
- Compile your findings into a design report and recommendation document for further development and validation.
