As Lab Scientist, you will design, set up and execute laboratory experiments to characterise microbial mechanisms of action. Your work will focus on microbe-microbe interactions, microbial identification and metabolism, and functional behaviour within complex ecosystems using faecal-based fermentation models. You will analyse and interpret newly generated experimental data as well as existing omics datasets, working closely with internal scientific experts and the bioinformatics team. In addition, you will contribute to the valorisation of these insights for product dossiers and/or new product developments.
Your main responsibilities are:
- Design, set up, execute and analyse microbiological research methods & assays (BSL1, BSL2) to characterise microbial mechanisms of action.
- Investigate microbial interactions and metabolism, both individually and as part of complex ecosystems.
- Establish, optimise, and run faecal batch fermentation models, including work with strict anaerobic bacteria and handling of clinical (faecal) samples.
- Perform microbial identification and quantification using flow cytometry, qPCR, dPCR.
- Explore omics datasets using applied bioinformatic approaches to generate mechanistic hypotheses and experimental leads, in consultation with our bioinformatician and senior scientists.
- Translate experimental data into actionable insights for marketing materials.
- Scope and manage your own projects within the team through literature review and discussions with internal and external experts, in consultation with senior scientists.
What do we ask of you?
We are looking for a driven scientist with a passion for microbes and the laboratory who meets the following requirements:
- Completed Master's degree in microbiology, bio(techno)logical sciences or related discipline.
- 2+ years of relevant (industry) experience in microbial research.
- A valid work permit to work in the Netherlands.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience and knowledge of microbiological techniques in BSL1 and BSL2 environments, with experience in flow cytometry, qPCR/dPCR, and faecal batch fermentation systems considered a strong asset.
- Affinity for applying bioinformatics skills to explore, analyse and interpret genomics, transcriptomics and metabolomics datasets.
- Independent and proactive way of working within a team setting.
- Proficient in English (Dutch is considered a plus).
- Strong analytical and proactive mindset, with a collaborative attitude.
