This research is conducted in close collaboration between laboratory scientists, surgeons, and organ perfusionists.

As a PhD candidate, you will participate in a project funded by the NWO Nationale Wetenschapsagenda. In this project, the Dutch consortium 'ARREST' aims to develop regenerative medicine strategies to repair, regenerate, and optimize injured donor livers that would otherwise be rejected for transplantation. A key technique in this project is the use of ex situ machine perfusion of donor livers.

One of the research lines within the Department of Surgery (section HPB & Transplant Surgery) is dedicated to liver transplantation. The group has extensive experience and an international reputation in machine perfusion preservation of donor livers. The research projects are translational and aim to increase the number of donor livers suitable for transplantation and to improve liver transplantation outcomes. The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for immunological, cell biological, and molecular research.
