Junior Legal & Compliance Advisor

As a Junior Legal & Compliance Advisor , you will play an important supporting role within our Legal

& Sustainability team. You will support the Legal & Sustainability teams in navigating European and

Dutch legislation governing renewable energy and biofuels, working closely with experienced

colleagues and gradually growing into a more independent advisory role.

In this role, you will translate complex legislation into clear, actionable guidance for internal teams.

You report to the Chief Compliance & Sustainability Officer. This position is ideal for a law graduate

with 1-3 years of experience who wants to gain hands-on experience in sustainability, compliance,

and renewable energy law within an international and dynamic work environment. This role is

designed for a junior professional who is eager to learn and develop within a supportive and

experienced team

Key Responsibilities

Legal & Regulatory Support

• Support the Legal & Sustainability teams with legal and regulatory questions related to EU and
• Dutch legislation applicable to renewable energy and biofuels (including RED III and ISCC) waste and ABP legislation, NVWA frameworks, and national schemes.
• Assist in interpreting and translating legislation into clear and practical operational guidance

  for internal stakeholders, under guidance of senior colleagues.

• Draft and review sustainability-related contract clauses, classification letters, and internal

  policy documents.

• Monitor regulatory developments and proactively communicate relevant updates within Sunoil.

Compliance & Risk Management

• Support supplier and KYC documentation reviews from a legal and sustainability compliance perspective (certificates, declarations, regulatory alignment).
• Help identify and flag potential legal or compliance risks at an early stage, escalating findings

  within the team where appropriate.

• Contribute to maintaining robust and auditable compliance frameworks across Sunoil's sites.

Business Development & Feedstock Onboarding

• Support feedstock onboarding projects by advising on legal classification and documentation requirements.
• Support new business development and feedstock onboarding initiatives by assisting with

  legal classification and documentation requirements, in close cooperation with the Legal &

  Sustainability teams.

Operational Support

• Support the Head of Sustainability with updating internal procedures, policies, and work instructions, with a focus on legal and compliance aspects.
• Proactively contribute ideas to improve processes, efficiency, and compliance robustness.

What we are looking for

Education

• WO (university-level) degree in Law (LLB/LLM), preferably Dutch law, with an affinity for sustainability, environmental, or EU law.

Experience

• 1-3 years of experience in legal advisory, compliance, or regulatory affairs.
• Experience within renewable energy, sustainability, waste, or environmental sectors is an

  advantage.

Skills & Competencies

• Strong legal analytical skills with the ability to apply legislation in a practical, business-oriented way.
• Clear and concise communicator in Dutch and English (written and spoken).
• Hands-on, pragmatic, and comfortable working across legal, compliance, and operational

  topics.

• Strong interest in renewable energy, circular economy, and the sustainability transition.
• Well-organised, proactive, and improvement-oriented.

Working at Sunoil

• Location : Based in Emmen, working primarily from the Emmen office.
• Travel : Occasional travel to Sunoil offices in Amsterdam and Kampen.
• Working hours : Full-time (32-40 hours per week).
