Legal representative - a meaningful job

As a litigation representative, you work for a unique organisation that often finds itself in the spotlight. You attend more hearings than the average solicitor, and your legal expertise makes a meaningful difference in the lives of people who want to stay in the Netherlands.

As a legal representative, you are responsible for handling immigration cases in court. You assess the legal tenability of decisions in immigration cases and defend the Minister's position, in writing and verbally, at Aliens Divisions and on appeal before the Council of State.

Legal representatives are required to possess many of the same qualities as solicitors and public prosecutors: you have strong analytical and language skills, the ability to work in a dynamic environment, and the capacity to distinguish between primary and secondary issues. You also have to be people-oriented, because there is a person with their own story behind every case. That is what makes this job so interesting!

The work week of a legal representative

As a legal representative, you attend court hearings on various immigration cases on average once a week. Ranging from an asylum centred around the credibility of a religious conversion, to a regular residency case concerning the validity of a marriage, a medical case or a naturalisation case. No two cases are the same.

In your work, you look beyond the law books, consulting digital sources, information reports, work instructions and case law. You sometimes consult with the Document and Identity Office of the IND about the authenticity of subsequent documents, or with experts on country of origin information and language analyses. Every case is unique, which makes for varied and challenging work.
